WHAT DEMOCRATS WANT TO GET DONE
Connecticut’s Democratic legislators have been waiting for 20 years for a like-minded governor to agree with their ideas and pass progressive policies. The recent election of Dan Malloy to the governor’s post has state Dems bustling with a slew of ideas they hope to pass this year while also dealing with an estimated $3.5 billion budget shortfall.Of course, dealing with the budget will be the legislature’s No. 1 priority this year, and the built-in deficit means any proposed legislation with costs attached is essentially dead on arrival.Still, there are high hopes for what can be accomplished in the new year. A few ideas that have been kicked around for years, like in-state university tuition for undocumented immigrants, abolishing the death penalty and decriminalizing marijuana, will likely come up for a vote this year.
