DANIEL BEATY'S "EMERGENCY"
Directed by Charles Randolph-Wright

A slave ship emerges in front of the Statue of Liberty, a surreal happening that sends New York City into a whirlpool of emotional responses. In this Obie Award-winning tour de force incorporating slam poetry and song, playwright and performer Daniel Beaty portrays 40 characters. These include a homeless man, a scientist, a Republican business executive, a street vendor, and an 11-year-old boy from the projects, who all respond to the unexpected phenomenon. Through the characters' varied testimonies on identity and personal freedom, "Emergency" weaves stirring commentaries on what it is to be human and longing to be free.
"Funnier than most serious plays and vastly smarter than most funny plays."      - Jeremy McCarter, New York Magazine
