RED BEANS AND RICE VERSUS LILLY WHITE

A good friend just emailed me
>Wondering when was the last time ... If any ... There were black quarterbacks going head to head for a college championship. Do you know? I know 2 black coaches went head to head in the NFL for the Superbowl a few years back but not sure it has even happened in the pros.

I love history. My mind went back to the Arthur Ashe book A Hard Road to Glory". Recall that the best horse racing jockeys were once Black. The Best bicycle racers were once black. Research who Fitz Pollard was (here's a big hint Frederick Douglass "Fritz" Pollard (January 27, 1894 – May 11, 1986) was the first African American head coach in the National_Football_League National Football League. Pollard along with Bobby Marshall were the first two African American players in the NFL in 1920. Sportswriter Walter Camp ranked Pollard as "one of the greatest runners these eyes have ever seen.
Ask yourself if Babe Ruth was the sultan of swat or if Josh Gibson remains to this day the greatest home run hitter of all time. Speaking of the greatest dare I say What is my Name- Muhammad Ali, although I must say the greatest athlete of all time is in my opinion Jack Johnson.
Black coaches, Black quarterbacks, can you imagine how many great black quarterbacks played for historically Black schools? As we approach Black history month, let us not forget that the the Negro Leagues were beginning to outdraw the White so-called Major Leagues. Do not forget that Jackie Robinson was not the best player in the Negro Leagues when he was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers.Rookie of the year my foot since young folks might be reading this!
Do not buy the hype - all kudos to the Oregon and Auburn teams and players, but ask Bear Bryant how he felt once he experienced Sam the Bam from Southern Cal, and realized that black beans and rice was better than lilly white.Ask yourself what the University of Texas at El Paso only proved once again by reminding folks that the Harlem Rens were the best basketball team but could not play in the NBA........
