Achieve Hartford! Discusses Qualities Needed in the Next Superintendent
Speaking as an independent, nonprofit organization of business and community leaders supporting student achievement and effective and sustained school reform in our city, Achieve Hartford! has given its perspective to the Hartford Board of Education on what is needed from the next School District superintendent.

In a January 18 letter to Board of Education Chair Ada Miranda, Achieve Hartford! stated its view that highly effective leadership is absolutely essential to drive lasting reform in the next, "sustaining" stage of positive school change that will follow the first four years of reform.

"How Hartford maintains - and accelerates - the momentum of positive school change is critically important, not just for the children and families of Hartford, but for the city's future economic and civic strength," Achieve Hartford! pointed out.

The letter also urged that the search committee require the next superintendent to demonstrate certain commitments to be successful, which include:

· Advancing and building upon the reforms made over the previous four years;
· Strong, innovative reform-minded leadership; and
· Building greater and lasting support for reform strategies among all education stakeholders in the city.
