DELAURO TO SPEAK AGAINST REPEALING HEALTH CARE REFORM LAW

Will visit Milford Senior Center to discuss benefits of new law

Washington, DC— From 11:00am- 12:00pm on Monday, January 10, Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) will visit the Milford Senior Center to discuss the Republican efforts to repeal the Affordable Care and Patient Protection Act and the impact this would have Americans, particularly seniors.

The health care reform law benefits all Americans, from those with pre-existing conditions, to young adults, to women, and seniors. It enables young adults to stay on their parents’ health insurance policies up to age 26, prevents insurance companies from refusing to insure children with pre-existing conditions, and ends the practice of ‘gender rating’ in which insurance companies routinely charged women higher premiums than men for the same coverage.

For our seniors, some of the law’s benefits have already gone into effect, such as improved access to affordable preventive care, a $250 credit to Medicare beneficiaries in the prescription drug ‘donut hole,’ extension of the life of the Medicare Trust Fund, and as of January 1, a 50 percent discount on brand-name medications to seniors who reach the doughnut hole coverage gap for prescription drugs. More than 540,000 seniors in Connecticut have Medicare coverage, and if the law is repealed they will be forced to cover out-of-pocket expenses for annual wellness exams and important preventive services like mammograms and colonoscopies. And over 32,000 Medicare beneficiaries received the tax-free $250 rebate in 2010 to help cover for prescription drugs in the donut hole.

The new health reform law puts Americans back in charge of their health care, and prevents insurance companies, instead of patients and doctors, from making treatment decisions. And just as critically, it creates American jobs, putting our workforce back to work. Repealing this law would cut funding and jobs throughout the country, and add a staggering $1.2 trillion dollars to the federal deficit.
