CT PREPARES FOR MINORITIES

Gary Holder-Winfield wants to prepare the state for 2020, when it’s estimated that half of the state’s working population will be minority.“We see Connecticut as being very white,” says the New Haven state representative, “but Connecticut, in 2020, is not so white — half the workforce will be minority. That’s a big percentage, and we need to be very concerned with that … How do we deal with this? It will require a sea change in how we approach things.” Holder-Winfield is relying on a 2006 report called “New England 2020,” co-authored by Stephen Coelen of UConn’s Connecticut Center for Economic Analysis. It found that 2020 may be the tipping point in terms of population: The report estimates that half of all workers between the ages of 25 and 29 will be a minority in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
