AFRICAN CARGO ROUTE LEADS TO NEW HAVEN
It would turn out there was a slave, Renty, who is in the history books because his photograph was used in 1850 by Harvard Professor Louis Agassiz, as evidence that races were different species. Agassiz, considered the leading scientist of his time, theorized that races came from separate origins and could have unequal attributes. Southern slave owners used his arguments to bolster their belief that whites were superior to blacks.
