Years of hard work at New Haven's Mother’s Kitchen undone by economy, debts- The New Haven Register - Serving New Haven, Connecticut
Since 1987, when Euannie Catnott, a new immigrant, took 5 pounds of chicken and a bag of rice and started cooking to make a living, she has been feeding people spicy Jamaican fare and taking care of those in need.

The 14-hour work days at Mother’s Kitchen became routine, sustaining herself and her family, as well as relatives back on the island. But the gloomy economy has left her facing foreclosure of the business and her home.

“It’s like a stone,” Catnott, 68, said of the pain in her chest these days as she contemplates her situation. “I’m ashamed. I’m very much ashamed,” said Catnott, a private person who is reduced to discussing her business and asking for help.
