On December 7, 2010, the Fair Rent Commission City of New Haven will commemorate forty years of service. To mark this occasion the Fair Rent Commission Board of Commissioners invites the community to a community forum entitled; Who, How and What Determines a “Fair” Market Rent. This community forum will take place in New Haven City Hall 165 Church Street, second floor meeting room number one at 6:00 PM.
Established December 7, 1970, by State Statutes and City Ordinance the Fair Rent Commission is established to “control and eliminate excessive rental charges on residential property within the city of New Haven, in recognition of a compelling need for rent stabilization for the duration of a severe housing shortage in New Haven.” A recent Bloomberg news report indicated that New Haven led the nation with the lowest percentage of apartment vacancies at the end of September 2010, documented by a study conducted Reis Inc., a national research firm which tracks housing patterns in the United States. The Fair Rent Commission also administers the City of New Haven’s U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (H.U.D.) Fair Housing Program. The Fair Housing Program protects residents and individuals against any violations of the HUD Fair Housing Act. The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing and public accommodations based on several protected classes such as race, national origin, disability and religion.
