The Boston Public Schools system this week launches a radical reboot of its 12 worst schools in a multimillion-dollar gamble that poses the greatest opportunity for success - and risk of failure - the 135-school system has seen in years.
In interviews with the Herald last week, principals offered an exclusive look at the changes in the so-called “turnaround schools,” which open Wednesday and are designed to become models for the 56,400-student district. They will deploy millions of dollars for new supplies, a longer school day and controversial new rules for teachers - including merit pay and suspension of union hiring rules.

The stakes are sky-high: If MCAS scores in the schools do not improve, the district could face a state takeover.
