WE KNOW WHAT TO DO: WE JUST HAVE TO DO IT !

I had the pleasure of attending the August 25th statewide conference entitled, “Promote Dignity in Schools: Priorities for NCLB Reauthorization hosted by Congressperson Chris Murphy.

It was held from 12 to 4pm at the New Life Church in Meriden, Connecticut. The conference featured Russlynn H. Ali, Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education as well as, Mark K. McQuillan, Commissioner, Connecticut State Department of Education, Dr. Marlon C. James, Assistant Professor - Educational Leadership, Neag School of Education, UConn · Merva Jackson, Executive Director, African Caribbean American Parents of Children with Disabilities(AFCAMP) , Matt Cregor, Assistant Counsel, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., George Sugai, OSEP Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, Neag School of Education, UConn , Alexandra Dufresne, Senior Policy Fellow, Connecticut Voices for Children and Mary Loftus Levine, Director of Policy and Professional Practice, Connecticut Education Association(CEA).Repeatedly was mentioned that we know what to do regarding many of the best practices to improve education in America. It was also emphasized that part of knowing what to do entails stopping doing some of the bad things that we are doing. I am not trying to talk in riddles. It was posited that if we just stop doing some of the bad things that we are doing, improvement would naturally occur. Something to think about and to do about!

(Ficklin Media Note: With Jimmie Lee Moore, Craig Kelly, Professor Marlon James and Bill Dyson in the midst of this event , it is clear that the issues before us are paramount)
