Connecticut spent about $13,848 per pupil in public elementary and secondary schools in 2008, ranking it among the states that spent the most on each student's education.

The biggest spender was New York, which spent $17,173 per pupil. Others at the top of the list are New Jersey, Alaska, the District of Columbia and Vermont.

Connecticut received the second-smallest percentage of public school funding from the federal government, at 4.2 percent. Only New Jersey (3.9 percent) received less funding per pupil.
