OPENING DOORS TO LEARNING
Thu., Jul 15
Stanley Battle's path to a life devoted to the betterment of youth through education began in a hardscrabble, working-class neighborhood of Springfield, Mass.
Battle's father, Henry, was a laborer who could fix anything with his hands; with the advantages of an education he could have been a mechanical engineer, his son says. Battle's mother, Rachel, not only cared for her three sons and daughter, but reached out to the children of the neighborhood as well: she fed them when they were hungry and gave them guidance and inspiration when they needed it. After a 60-year marriage, both parents have since passed on. But Battle says he will never forget the values they instilled in him: hard work, integrity, the value of church and community, and an active compassion for those less fortunate.
