P.T. Barnum residents to participate in diversity program with police - Connecticut Post
BRIDGEPORT -- It's no secret that blue uniforms are, typically, not the most welcome sight in public housing complexes. And many police don't count such complexes among their favorite places to be, either.
"There's an historical distrust between police and inner-city residents, particularly people of color," said Yvonne Davis, spokeswoman for the Bridgeport Housing Authority.
Police have felt threatened while residents felt harassed. Both sides have felt disrespected and, at times, fearful. But the BHA is hoping to ease that long-standing tension by establishing a program that will promote open dialogue, understanding and mutual respect between city police and public housing residents.
