New Haven Public Schools Going into Neighborhoods to Register Children for Pre-K

NEW HAVEN – As part of its national recognized School Change Initiative, the New Haven Public School system will be visiting neighborhoods around the city to encourage parents to register their children, ages three to five, for Pre-K at one of the twelve early childhood centers in New Haven. A big yellow bus will make the rounds and provide information on the value of Pre-K programs and will be prepared to register children on the spot.

Parents wanting to register their child will need to bring three items; the child’s birth certificate, proof of income or budget sheet and a utility bill.

New Haven Public Schools wants every child in the city between the ages of three and five to have the opportunity to attend Pre-school this year. The research is clear; Pre-K learning experiences build a solid foundation that helps children succeed in school. “We have to reach more children at these early ages and give them the tools they need to be prepared to learn when they enter Kindergarten”, said Superintendent, Dr. Reginald Mayo. “We believe early childhood education is a key focus area as we strive to close the achievement gap, cut the drop-out rate in half and ensure all our graduates are prepared to succeed in college.”
