On August 13, 2010 Malcolm X Grassroots Movement's (MXGM) Black August Hip-Hop Project will produce its 13th Annual Benefit Concert; this year it will take place at Highline Ballroom in New York City. This show continues a long tradition as the only hip-hop show of its caliber for the benefit and awareness of U.S. political prisoners, giving hip-hop artists an opportunity to tangibly support grassroots activists in their fight for social justice and human rights. This year'€™s concert goers will see live performances by Dead Prez, Cody Chestnutt, Pharoahe Monch, Sadat X, Hasan Salaam, Homeboy Sandman, and special surprise guests. Tickets are available for $15 in advance and $20 at the door, all of which will be donated to support our political prisoners. [You can purchase your tickets online or at the Highline Ballroom Box Office - 431 W.16th St, NYC.]
The Black August Hip Hop Project was created by the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement to promote human rights and raise awareness about U.S. political prisoners unjustly incarcerated for their actions as activists and community organizers. The U.S. has nearly one hundred political prisoners most of whom are rarely talked about. The Black August Concert provides a way for us to spread awareness to a multitude of people using the powerful tool of hip-hop for a positive cause. In addition to the NYC concerts organizers have also facilitated international exchanges and festivals in Cuba, South Africa, Tanzania, Brazil, and Venezuela.
