READ all about it: Book chronicles stories behind legends of New Haven mural- The New Haven Register - Serving New Haven, Connecticut

NEW HAVEN — A bold, colorful mural painted on the brick front of the Willis K. Stetson Branch Library was intended to draw attention to the branch, which was sometimes missed because it’s in the middle of a strip of stores at 200 Dixwell Ave.
But even before its dedication in summer 2009, the mural took on a life of its own, and now, no matter what the weather may do, the image and its message have been preserved in a book self-published by recent Southern Connecticut State University graduate Marissa Iadevaia-Jalbert of Maine.
She worked under the direction of her library science professor, Diane Brown, who also is the branch librarian.
“The book will give a new life to the mural. Even years from now, if the mural is not standing, the book will be there,” said Iadevaia-Jalbert. She not only got an A on her independent study project, but also recognition for the book when she graduated this year with a bachelor’s degree in library science.
“It was a personal growth — a journey. I kept saying, ‘I’m not doing this for me, I’m doing it for the children.’”
