The Freddie Fixer fixer parade is our Freddie. It is our Black Coalition. It is our Urban League. It is our Black Minister's Organization. It is our Greater New Haven Business and Professional Association and Our Elks. It is one day and or weekend, where the tears, sweat and songs of Cinque, Constance Baker Motley, Ernest Saunders, Frank Williams, Edna Baker Carnegie and Adam Clayton Powell can be remembered in dance, beat and rhythm. It is the Monterrey and homage to some of the oldest Black Churches in the United States. The Freddie is not owned by one person. We all own it. As it's stock in the community rises we celebrate. As it's stock plummets in the community we suffer. It is Jackie Robinson as parade marshall and Ed Grant and other visionaries dreams coming to life. It is the annual barometer of our progress and struggle. As sure as spring arrives legacy, tradition and inheritance of this community treasure is passed along.
A parade is more than a parade. It is an opportunity for businesses to advertise. For vendors to make some money. For Families to reconnect. For organizations to remind themselves and to rededicate themselves to why they were started in the first place. The fraternity and sorority world do not need to look for venues such as Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun to share their step expertise. If you want to save the children, you do not have to only hold workshops and discussion forums.Imagine just a small sampling of the many great music groups performing during the parade, either on floats or stationed along the parade. Imagine a local radio station gospel choir float. Imagine the High School Basketball Champs allowing us to applaud them along the route for their victory. The variety and beauty that can be manifested can be awesome. Nothing sustained and positive can occur with only a few hands. Only many hands on deck will make Cingue smile. He deserves no less.
