HarlemLIVE is a youth media arts organization, which uses journalism, media and technology as a vehicle for empowering some of society’s most disadvantaged youth. HarlemLIVE’s web magazine www.harlemlive.org and TV show HL On Air are produced entirely by students, giving them the skill sets needed for higher education and any ultimate career path. HL On Air is using new web-based technology to engage inner city youth in real community issues, create and distribute innovative content while promoting student-led positive change. HarlemLIVE builds leaders. It puts students in a hands-on environment where they make decisions, set up interviews, do research and bring projects to completion. Students learn to be proactive, using the latest technology and communication tools available today. Mentored by media professionals who volunteer their time with our organization, HL students are learning photography, videography, written arts, public speaking and graphic design in an exceptionally diverse environment. Students then take advantage of social media like Facebook, Twitter, blogging, qik, ustream and youtube to communicate their message. It is a cutting edge way of reaching youth with social issues that they normally would not have access to, and a groundbreaking way of engaging those youth who would otherwise not participate in social issues and positive student-led change. HarlemLIVE is currently in phase two of its development plan, having successfully transformed from a volunteer to a staffed organization, and is now turning its focus to program refinement and expansion, including impact measurement.
