Black Co-Eds Expelled 50 Years Ago Get Degrees
Three men who, 50 years ago, were ordered expelled from Alabama State University because they took part in a sit-in at the Montgomery County Courthouse cafeteria, received long-awaited degrees on Saturday.
James McFadden, St. John Dixon and Joseph Peterson were applauded as they walked across the stage during commencement at Dunn-Oliver Acadome to receive honorary degrees from President William Harris.
“Today, we honor those who were expelled,” Harris said. “We don’t know how your lives were changed by what happened 50 years ago, but we know how our lives were changed by what you did.”
