When a young woman in New Haven recently fled her apartment because her roommates were abusing drugs, she turned to New Haven Home Recovery, which operates two shelters for homeless women and children.
New Haven Home Recovery not only helped her find a new apartment and a new roommate, but also paid her first month’s rent and security deposit and provided donated furniture.
She was among the lucky ones.
“We have seen a 30 percent increase in demand this year over last year that we couldn’t meet,” said Executive Director Kellyann Day. “It’s the economy. Many people have lost their apartments. Jobs are scarce and people are not able to get back on their feet.”
