If responses to Barkley Hendricks’ figurative works spark controversy, the Connecticut College art professor shrugs it off.
“Nudity is loaded,” Hendricks said. His retrospective exhibit, “Barkley Hendricks: The Birth of the Cool,” is touring the country. “Especially black nudity, I think that’s the one that gets the most attention.”
Hendricks has received a lot of attention for this exhibit, comprised of 50 oil and acrylic paintings. He also works in photography, watercolors and other mediums. His work has earned him the national 2010 Artist Award for a Distinguished Body of Work, bestowed by the College Art Association.
