Michael Eric Dyson,was the keynote speaker for the 2010 Black Solidarity Day Conference held at Yale University,February 19-21. Professor Dyson is an American Book Award recipient and two-time NAACP Image Award winner. The conference is in essence a national conclave. Over 500 students were in attendance from coast to coast.From Long Beach State, to the University of Michigan, to the Coast Guard Academy, to Seton Hall, to Bates to Morehouse and more, students made the pilgramage to New Haven-Yale Town. Professor Dyson is of course well known. His remarks,his lecture, his comedy, his singing, his sermon and his didactic weaving of the Black Aesthetic has to be heard.He was in complete harmonic resonance providing an ancestral orchestration of the Negro-Colored-Mulatto-Black-African American sojourn.How can one describe the creatively masterful yet factual narrative storytelling of profound truths ranging from Justin Timberlake, to Janet Jackson, to Barack Obama, to Snoop Dog, to Jay Z, to Lebron James,to Mike Tyson, to Little Richard, to James Baldwin,to Martin Luther King, to Bill Cosby,to Pat Boone, to Kanye West and more.
His juxtaposition of philosophy and praxis, personal fulfillment and commitment, education and social benefit was laser like in it's relevance for a Black Solidarity Conference.The audience embrace of this exquisitely precious experience was delicious to observe.
Note the above picture where Morehouse alum, Rev. Samuel Ross Lee , pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church, is surrounded by some of the Morehouse delegation. Rev. Lee provided the invocation, but during and after the dinner was able to caucus with his fellow Morehouse men in deep sharing and bonding. This spontaneous transfer of knowledge and experience exemplified and embodied the vital construct of Black Solidarity. Congratulations to Davida McGhee and her Black Solidarity Conference board members for manifesting the dream.
