Commission on Equal Opportunities Housing Authority of New Haven New Haven Building Trades
Career Development School 3rd Annual Benefit Dinner
was held on Thursday, January 7, 2010 at the The Commons
Woolsey Hall, Yale University
The J. Miller-Pearson Career Development School exposes New Haven residents to the building trades in a realistic work setting. Established in January 2007, the primary goal is to teach not only the skills required by the various trades but also to simulate an ac- tual work environment setting.
The School, funded by the Housing Authority of New Haven (“HANH”), is located at two specific locations on Housing Authority properties and provides its residents quality training using Joint Apprenticeship Training Council (“JATC”) instructors.
The proceeds from this dinner will provide income stipends to non -Housing Authority residents who otherwise would not be able to take advantage of this opportunity.
The program has rules that closely copy those found on a con- struction site pertaining to safety, personal appearance, atten- dance, communication and work ethic. As part of the training process students renovate vacant burned units and units in need of major rehabilitation at two Housing Authority housing developments.
The School trains up to 20-25 students in six master trade modules four(4) times per year.
The dinner sponsor contributions will enable the school to increase the number of non-Housing Authority residents in each module. Students upon completion will be placed on citywide construction sites at Yale University, School Construction, Housing Authority, Yale Cancer Center and all other citywide project sites, when local union openings are available.

The mission statement say's it all "We believe that all people are entitled to a good paying job with benefits and the right to retire with dignity and participate in the economic development of our region"
