The New Haven Guardians were born in 2004 and I salute the founder's vision and tenacity. These folks place their life on the line- yes it is a job and the chances of "accidents " on the job may or may not be great. But whenever I encounter a protective services person my mind wanders to what it is about the human condition and this cro-magnon species that kills itself. Think about it. Other species will kill other species. Lions will eat tigers.Whales will swallow minnows and probably not even know it.Rams will butt horns but not to the death. Cats will chase squirrels. But for we recent cave dwellers,where it is written that dominion over the earth means killing each other, by hand or on the altar of sacrifice or with megaton nuclear arms. The sword and the shield were not enough. Bullet proof armor is now required to fight in the name of your nation-tribe-or spec of soil in Afghanistan. The 100 years war in Europe and the war to end all wars (WWI) are now distant memories burned to a human crisp in the Nazi ovens.
So we return to the New Haven Guardians and their annual Christmas giveaway at the Housing Authority Community Center of Ashmun Street on Thursday night December 17. Corny, routine, expected, so what some might say. But as we all prepare to enter 2010 ,another dream moment expectation even if only for a smoke filled blurry nanosecond flashes across our imagination.
Peace of earth without security forces and armies to protect us from ourselves!
I salute the Guardians, If we can imagine it , we can make it a reality.
