5 Americans and Canadians

You might have seen or read the widespread graph or widely circulated email describing the world from a demographic sense. It is a census depiction of what if the world were a village composed of 100 people. In this scenario, there would be 5 Americans and Canadians, 8 Latin Americans,12 Europeans,14 Africans and 60 Asians, with 18 non-colored people(whites) and 82 people of color(non-whites). CNN Correspondent Soledad O'brien spoke at Yale yesterday at a Master's Tea at Calhoun College and also at the Yale Law School. Her topic at the law school was "Diversity in the Media: Behind the Scenes and in Our Lives" and a report of her remarks during the Master's Tea is linked below. It seems to me however that as the diversity mantra continues to be intoned in America,it sounds to me like over baked nationalism. The argument is that diversity will help us problem solve better, it will lead to innovation, it will maximize our human capital, it will harness and catalyze our inherent national brain power, embrace the beauty of our diversity and we shall overcome.
This focus on national pride and destiny strikes me as something like a beans and rice, pork chops and chitterlings, gumbo, ghoulosh ,sauerkraut, fried rice, taco, tex- mex ,sushi, raw food , vegan neo manifest destiny fatal reaction. The world might not only be flat but tilted on a incline with some nations sliding down the hill faster than others.

The world is a small place in the universal scheme. Boundaries are artificial and man-made( just ask the Palestinians, the Ashanti and the Pequots). The US is a dominant player but perhaps the myth that we are too big to fail is once again slave-master I can not tell a lie George Washington national hubris at work.Like a 13th Sylvester Stallone Rambo movie, the formula might be spent or now might be produced over seas!
