Arrival of Freedom Schooner Amistad at Maritime Museum of the Atlantic heralds celebrations for Black Freedom 175 in Halifax

The Amistad Freedom Society of Nova Scotia, with the support of Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and Black Freedom 175 Title Sponsor, EastLink, welcomed the Freedom Schooner Amistad to Halifax Sat., Aug. 1 to Sat., Aug. 8 with a wide roster of events in and around the city, with some special events planned throughout Natal Day weekend.

Black Freedom 175 is Nova Scotia=s celebration of the 175th anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery by the British Parliament on August 1st, 1834.

Freedom Schooner Amistad will visit ports throughout Nova Scotia until August 17 for Black Freedom 175, the celebration of the 175th anniversary of the abolition of slavery by the British Parliament on August 1, 1834.

Most Halifax events for Black Freedom 175 are open to the public, and many are free. Celebrations will include public tours of Amistad, several musical events including traditional African drumming and African-inspired music, theatrical presentations, and special Youth Leadership for Freedom workshops.

Work with young people is at the very heart of the Freedom Schooner Amistad=s mission and it is a core part of Black Freedom 175. About one hundred and twenty young people from the Halifax area have been chosen to participate in four youth workshops that bring together racially and ethnically mixed groups of young people to participate in activities that build leadership, explore the richness of diversity, celebrate freedom and then provide an opportunity to sail aboard Amistad. There are eight groups of young people from communities across Nova Scotia who will have participated in the program by the end of Amistad=s visit this summer.

Plan to see Freedom Schooner Amistad when she arrives in Halifax Harbour as part of a Parade of Sail on Sat., Aug. 1. From 10 a.m. to noon, a flotilla of vessels from Halifax Regional Municipality carrying young passengers from the Black community will meet Amistad at the mouth of Halifax Harbour and escort her to her berth along the wharf at Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

At noon, a 1-hour free public official civic welcome will take place featuring speakers, poetry and traditional drumming to launch the Black Freedom 175 event in Halifax. The vessel will be open to the public on Sat., Aug. 1 from 2 to 4 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend the Freedom 175 Tribute Concert on the Natal Day Waterfront Tent next to Maritime Museum of the Atlantic from 4:30 p.m. to midnight.
