CARE: Community Alliance for Research and Engagement TEMPORARY POSITIONS

Dear friends of CARE:

We have successfully completed data collection for our asset mapping project with a very positive collaboration with Youth@Work and the Color of Words. We plan to distribute preliminary data and maps in September. (News articles about the project can be seen on our website: http://ycci.yale.edu/care.)

In the meantime, we are gearing up for our next round of data collection—surveying over 3,000 students and residents of New Haven. Given our commitment to providing information to the community in a timely manner, our goal is to complete these surveys before Thanksgiving. Therefore, we are hiring a large cadre of temporary staff to help us with this data collection effort. Attached are the job descriptions for two separate employment opportunities with CARE. We will be hiring one group of temporary staff to assist with data collection in the schools and another group to assist with surveys of residents in six neighborhoods. Please see the descriptions for more information. As indicated in the job descriptions, please direct inquiries about the school positions to Susan Peters and direct inquiries about the neighborhood positions to me. Please feel free to forward this information. Thank you!

Very best,

Alycia

TEMPORARY POSITION: DATA COLLECTION IN SCHOOLS
Student Health Data Collection
New Haven Public Schools
October 7th-November 6th, 2009
Description of Data Collection in Schools
As part of our major community based research project, CARE will be collecting health data from a cohort of 1700 5th and 6th grade students in 12 New Haven public schools through surveys and physical measures each October for three years. We will begin our first set of data collection from mid October-early November, 2009.
Staffing Needs
We need 8 people to attend training and assist with data collection in the New Haven Public Schools for approximately 4 weeks from October 7th-November 6th from 9:00-4:00.
Responsibilities
Training: A 3 day training session will be held for staff from Wednesday October 7th through Friday October 9th.
Survey: Starting October 13th (Columbus day on the 12th), we will work in teams of 2-3 to administer the computer based survey to students (one class at a time) in the school media labs, which will take about 10 days. One person will read the survey aloud while 2 others assist with questions that arise. Each class will have 1 hour in the labs and we hope to complete at least 4 classes in each school per day, depending on need and scheduling. There are 67 classes in 12 schools.
Physical Measures: During weeks 3-4, we will work in teams of 2 to collect physical measures (heart rate, height, weight, BMI and blood pressure) on the same group of students before gym class. We’ll use automated equipment and enter values into an Excel file on a laptop computer. Again, we anticipate needing about an hour per class.
Criteria
Must be at least 18 years of age, have reliable transportation, work well with children, and be available for the entire 4 weeks. Preferred: Experience with taking vital signs and/or Excel.
Payment
The hourly rate for this temporary position is $12.00.
