When one of the "25 Most Influential Americans" is arrested in their own yard, how do we measure the cultural progress in modern day America? I’m sure today, President Obama is shaking his head in grief as to how one of his mentors, Henry Louis Gates, has become another victim of fitting a description.
Talk about irony. Gates arrest was a page directly out of the newly released book A Black Man’s Guide To Law Enforcement In America. In chapter three of this book, author Shafiq R. Fulcher Abdussabur writes, “ Historically, most circumstances that have involved conflict between police and young African American and Latino/Hispanic males have been the result of a “failure to communicate” by all parties. What you need to know is if the police come up short on communication skills, it will not result in the officer going to jail. You will be the one to pay the price! So pay close attention!”
“if a citizen became loud and rowdy with the officer, it will most likely lead to the officer arresting the citizen for disorderly conduct or interfering with a police investigation.” Such as was the case with the locked out of the house home owner and well educated Gates.
America is at a crucial transition point in world history. There are a significant number of young people who are living their lives with a purpose of breaking down racial barriers and stereotypes. However, there is still a contingency of American culture that insists in hanging on to the good ol days. The election of the first Black President has only increased the exigency of such groups to preserve the old American Spirit at all costs. As a result, we are now seeing more frequent reminders of how race and status is being levied against the minority community as attempts to curtail any more ambitions to alter that history.
What is surprising about Gates arrest is that he has mastered the incites of how to operate in the world of the privilege. But, like the vast majority of Black men in America, he has now had a front row seat at where our society really stands on race relations and race perceptions. Gates encounter is the norm for most Black and Latino males. He was truly one of the lucky ones because there have been countless incidents nationwide that have had similar starts and deadly outcomes.

Issues like these will not just go away on there own. It will take a process of educating the minority community. And, it will take both education and reform of American Law Enforcement. Until that happens, America could elect ten more Black presidents in a row, and nothing would change but the date!”
