About the Youth Advocacy Awards
For the past 9 years, Youth Continuum has honored those that work along side us to serve children and families. The Youth Advocacy Awards have celebrated their achievements and their continued efforts to improve opportunities in education, health care, employment and enrichment for Connecticut’s young people.
On June 9, 2009, Youth Continuum will honor State Representative Toni E. Walker with a Youth Advocate Award. Representative Walker is a seasoned social activist and advocate for youth, education, and human rights. As a Connecticut State Representative she created and chaired both the Juvenile Jurisdiction Planning and Implementation Committee and the Juvenile Jurisdiction Policy and Operations Coordinating Council. Today, Toni chairs the Department of Children and Families Therapeutic Child Care Committee, and is a member of the Adolescent Parenting Council and many other community organizations.
The Community Foundation of Greater New Haven will also receive the distinguished Youth Advocate Award for their vital support of METEC and innovative move to place priority funding on general operating support in the community. It is through the forward thinking leadership of the Community Foundation that so many non profits organizations have been given the opportunity to impact communities throughout Greater New Haven, even in these strenuous financial times.
This year’s Partnership Awards will be distributed to three organizations that have championed direct care and significant support of our youth: TriCon Construction, The Girls’ Friendly Society and Melville Charitable Trust. Each of these partners has enabled Youth Continuum to better serve homeless youth in our community. We are grateful for the time and effort that each of these supporters has dedicated to our mission.
Alongside the honors of the morning, Youth Continuum will introduce the achievements of several youth within our programs. Two youth speakers have been selected to tell their stories at the breakfast while others will showcase artwork, literature and music developed at our Education Training and Enrichment Center. Also this year, the Yes I Can! Scholarships will be awarded, providing youth with opportunities to pursue academic and enrichment goals with up to $5,000 in funding dispersed, courtesy of an anonymous donor.
