New Haven Students in Yale Film and Music Program To Screen Creations
New Haven, Conn. — The Yale School of Music will host the premiere of two films — one live-action, one animated — that were made by New Haven public school students through the support of the Yale Music in Schools Initiative.
The movies will be screened on Friday June 12 in Sprague Hall, 470 College, 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The live-action “The Mystery of John C. Daniels” and the animated “When the Brothers Unite” are the culmination of the first Music and Film project, part of an ambitious program established by the Yale College Class of 1957 to help reestablish music as an integral part of public school education. Known as the Music in Schools Initiative, the program was established at the Yale School of Music by the Class of 1957 in honor of their 50th reunion.
The Class of 1957 gift, in addition to supporting a biennial national symposium for music teachers and a visiting professorship for music education, funds unique classroom projects run by Yale students in the New Haven public system. There are now 28 city schools participating, with more than 100 Yale students from the School of Music, various other graduate programs and Yale College actively involved in the effort.
In the first Music and Film project, students from Co-Op High School wrote, directed and produced films based on books created last year by elementary- and middle-school students involved in another project of the initiative, Music and Book Writing. In that program, students write and illustrate their own narratives and work with Yale School of Music composers on musical accompaniment. At the completion of the project, a narrator reads the book aloud in a school assembly, while an overview projector displays the children’s artwork, and a Yale ensemble performs the original music.
The films to be screened on June 12 are based on “When the Brothers Unite” by fourth-graders at the Lincoln-Bassett School, and “The Mystery of John C. Daniels” by middle-school students at John C. Daniels School. New musical scores for the film adaptations of the books were provided School of Music composition students.
