A NEW GENERATION OF PROBLEM SOLVERS
On Saturday, June 27, 2009, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the Cortland Wilson Branch of the New Haven Public Library, located at 303 Washington Avenue, teens (13-19) from throughout the city will speak out and plan for positive change in New Haven’s neighborhoods.
During a five-hour work session teens will explore elements of healthy communities; map the existence and nature of youth participation in New Haven; explore youth-adult partnerships and examine how different groups come to decisions. The teens will interact with each other using best practices and tools for youth-adult partnerships with invited adult neighborhood leaders. The activities will introduce the teens to needs assessment, data gathering and analysis in planning for successful change. The activities will also give the teens some insight in to project design, implementation, and evaluation.
Teens completing the training will have the opportunity to respond to a request for proposals. One group of teens will be awarded a $1,000 grant to design, implement and evaluate a change initiative this summer in their neighborhood. The award-winning team will begin their initiative in July and culminate their effort before the end of September. Other teen planners will be presented options for integrating their ideas into the work of the nonprofit intermediary Empower New Haven.
This event is free and open to any teen (13-19) in the city of New Haven. There will be food, fun, and prizes. This event is funded in part by Empower New Haven and presented by Neighborhood Leadership Initiative http://www.thefutureforce.org
