Awards Scholarships to Five Accomplished Teens
The New Haven chapter of the Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, the oldest African American Greek letter social fraternity founded in 1904 in Philadelphia held its annual scholarship ceremony on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at Carmen Anthony's. The chapter is known as the Beta Tau Boulé and was inspired by Edward A. Bouchet, the first African American to earn a doctorate from an American University. He received his Ph.D. in physics from Yale in 1876. Scholarship dollars are awarded through the Promising Scholars Fund at The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven and are raised privately.
