'Death of a Salesman turns 60'

(Peter Casolino/Register) The cast of “Death of a Salesman,” the first Arthur Miller play performed at Yale Repertory Theatre: Kimberly Scott, Linda Loman), Charles S. Dutton (Willy); back left, Ato Essandoh (Biff) and Billy Eugene Jones (Happy).
NEW HAVEN — Never say never. Just ask Charles S. Dutton, a.k.a. Roc, star of the small screen, big screen and, however reluctantly, stage. Six years ago, at the end of a two-month run on Broadway in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” — the play that made him famous during its 1985 Broadway premiere — Dutton proclaimed that he was retiring from the theater and would apply his energy and skill exclusively to film and television.
Yeah, well that’ll learn ya.
“To remain in theater, you have to be in love with acting,” said Dutton over hot tea a block away from Yale Repertory Theatre, where the 58-year-old actor will play Willy Loman in James Bundy’s African-American production of Arthur Miller’s iconic play “Death of a Salesman,” which celebrates the 60th anniversary of its Broadway premiere. “You don’t have to be in love with acting for film and TV,” he said as he rested his cup on the table beside his stiff fedora. “There you only act for two minutes at a time, then you’re back in your trailer.” Not the case with “Death of a Salesman,” which Friday begins a week of previews before its April 30 opening. Dutton will be on stage for most of the play’s twoand-three-quarter hours playing Willy Loman, one of America’s most scrutinized, tragic heroes.
