Who was David Ruggles? Born in Norwich, Connecticut, Ruggles (1810-1849) made a name for himself in New York City as a bookseller, journalist, abolitionist, Underground Railroad conductor and founding member of the Vigilance Committee. Ruggles assisted fugitive Frederick Douglass just when he most needed help. Ruggles was the most hated abolitionist in New York.
