Strange Fruit Screens at New Haven Library Feb. 12

The New Haven Public Library commemorates Black History Month with a special screening of Strange Fruit, a documentary about the song that became a Billie Holiday signature piece. The song began as a protest poem written in 1938 by a Jewish schoolteacher and union activist from the Bronx, who later set it to music. The film includes historical notes by folk singer Pete Singer, playwright and critic Amiri Baraka, Civil Rights activist Rev. Dr. C. T. Vivian, Commodore Records' Milt Gabler, as well as musical performances by Cassandra Wilson and Lady Day herself.

Screening is at the Main Library, 133 Elm St., 6-7pm. There is no charge for this program, and free parking is available. Contact the library at 946-8835 for more information.
