REAL LIFE - REAL TALK

It’s okay. You can say it.

What is Real Life. Real Talk.® ?

Real Life. Real Talk is a bold, nationwide effort to change the social climate in targeted communities by creating more open, honest, and balanced talk about sexuality and health. Since its New Haven launch in March of 2008, Real Life. Real Talk. has partnered with more than thirty local organizations to create a broad-based coalition focused on both young people and adults. Through its media campaign, website, and education programs (such as Sex Ed for Parents) Real Life. Real Talk. has helped foster a more positive social climate in the New Haven area.

The long-term goal is to help to ensure that all people—and especially young people—have adequate information and services to enable them to make healthy choices regarding their sexuality and their relationships. When individuals and communities are allowed and supported to talk honestly about sex, and when the consequences of silence are questioned, an increase in positive and healthy behavior change will follow.

What is “It’s okay. You can say it.”?

“It’s okay. You can say it.” is part of a national effort to encourage honest talk by collecting stories that answer the question “What do you wish someone had told you about sex?” By inviting and displaying these stories in a variety of formats (postcards, video, online) Real Life. Real Talk. will model open conversation about sexuality and relationships. Additionally, “It’s okay. You can say it.” is a celebration of the successful community collaboration in New Haven. During the month of October, Real Life. Real Talk. coalition partners hosted a series of events at local schools and community venues.

How does it work?

Real Life. Real Talk. provided businesses with postcards and a drop box on-site display. To share their stories, participants completed a postcard answering the question “What do you wish someone had told you about sex?” and deposited it anonymously in the box. Members of the Real Life. Real Talk. team collected the stories to create a sample collection of the postcards to be displayed in local partner organizations across New Haven.
