I Must Understand Society

I Must Understand Society is my new mantra. (IMUS)

Okay perhaps somewhat inspired by the IMUS episode, but nonetheless who has not thought about words and their collective and individual impact. We have heard the phrases, "do the right thing" and "tipping point". As an aside would not phrase originators Spike Lee and Malcom Gladwell welcome a small payment each time "their" word juxtapositions were mouthed.

But alas words can not be copywrited as of yet when intoned. But have not "do the right the thing" and "tipping point" become almost word-logos?

Anyway, if one considers the body of work thus far of Spike Lee and Malcolm Gladwell their creative efforts to contribute to society do provide a discussion context for Mr.Imus's verbal lip moving, with air flowing through his lung and throat , evoking sound which we collectively translate from word symbols to personal meaning.

For indeed , perhaps all words are but symbols created and shared, but like all art , it is open to individual, group, collective, societal and political interpretation.

Was the first utterance to denote, your family versus my family, your tribe versus my tribe, your sex versus my sex, matters of evolutionary convenience and even necessity or motivated by a biological striving to be perceived as better, richer, purer, more distinct?

As we strive to do the right thing once again, some might retreat into the sacred texts which somewhere if memory serves "talk" about being kind to and respecting others. Some might create a new word world to describe "love" or Rodney King might still ask "Can't we all get along?"

Malcolm Gladwell explores in his books the theme of context and condition and the vacillation between our beliefs and our behaviors.

It does still seem to be a mystery- this human species and ancestral struggle. Nonetheless we journey on, apparently captured in a world or words.

Sticks and Stones once vital for human survival - words- still vital for survival !
