BEFORE COLUMBUS

Let me be very clear. I am taking advantage of the press release below to beat a dead horse  and maybe a crazy horse !

Can you imagine living in England and hearing about the City of London celebrating it's 375th year anniversary and thereby implying that everything that happened before that was of no consequence or historical value?

Can you imagine living in Italy and receiving a email message asking citizens of Rome to celebrate the 375th anniversary of Rome, discounting the legacy of the Roman empire , the lions, the gladiators, Ceasar and all of the rest?

What about Athens?

Well you get the picture.

In discussing "American " history this is the constant quandary from my vantage point of preference.

We can assume that nothing took place before 1638 of so. Or we can assume that what ever took place did not matter.

Were the savages or the natives just an endangered species that we failed to preserve in our national parks and successfully eradicated or did their civilization just die a natural death of Darwin's law of the fittest will survive and those that can not adapt will die ?

Can we compare the achievements of  the Quinnipiacs with the arrival of the Dutch explorer for whom we have named Adrian's Landing?

Let's forget about the blood that was spilled rather constantly for 100 years or more shortly after the "first thanksgiving."

During the heat of those battles it was not a forgone conclusion that the nine squares would become a haven rather than a prison for the foreign invaders?

But  I digress , as you enjoy the celebration of this 375 year old haven perhaps pause if only for a second to remember the haven that this land-our land-their land provided.

-PRESS RELEASE-
NEW HAVEN SEEKING ARTISTS AND VOLUNTEERS FOR THE CITY’S 375TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

(New Haven, CT)  The City of New Haven’s Department of Art, Culture and Tourism is looking for artists and event volunteers for its 375th Anniversary Celebration, which will take place on Saturday, April 27th from 1 to 4 pm on the New Haven Green.

“We are looking for singers, dancers and other performers for this historic celebration and we want artists of all ethnicities, cultures and neighborhoods to participate,” said Vivian Nabeta, the Director of the City’s Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism.

Nabeta added that as long as performances are family-friendly almost anything goes. “We’d love to hear about any creative ideas artists may have for performances or activities that are participatory and will engage and involve the audience.”

Artists should be available between 1 pm and 4 pm on April 27th (though artists do not have to stay for the entire time) and performances should be no longer than 10 minutes. Finally, artists must have their own means of transportation.

The City is also looking for volunteers to help run New Haven’s 375th Celebration on Saturday, April 27th between 12 noon and 5pm. Volunteer shifts will be flexible, but it is desired that people volunteer for at least a two hour shift.

Volunteers are needed for the following activities:
Event set-up
Event break-down
Performer check-ins and coordination
Art activity assistance
Tour guide assistance and other general event duties.

Both individuals and organizations are encouraged to participate.

For more information, or to volunteer, please contact Kim Futrell at 203.946.7172 or at kfutrell@newhavenct.net.
