Building Community into New Haven Planning: a Lecture and Discussion with Dr. David Brain http://www.urbandesignleag ue.org/
New Haven has been fortunate, despite a difficult economy, to have major development projects underway in the downtown area. Many city residents are focusing attention on how to improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods. These projects have generated an intense community conversation about how to build public participation into planning. The City of New Haven and the Economic Development Corporation are now discussing how to conduct charrettes for Phase II and III of the Downtown Crossing Project.
Dr. David Brain, a social scientist and board member of the National Charrette Institute came to New Haven to discuss charrettes and participatory planning. Dr. Brain has worked with many communities to design a planning process that both revitalizes their neighborhoods' physical structure and its community bonds. Dr. Brian's visit offered an ideal opportunity for the broad spectrum of groups and agencies beginning to explore the charrette process to discuss best practices and New Haven interests with a national expert.
